The Neurodivergent Friendly Workbook of DBT Skills
As neurodivergent individuals, we often experience different types of distress from living in a society that isn’t designed for our differences. It isn’t just emotional distress but also meltdowns and sensory distress that we experience too. One of the best things we can do to support ourselves is manage our needs and respond to our distress in a way that works for us.
This is where Dialectical Behaviour Therapy skills come in! Unfortunately, DBT skills aren’t always accessible, straight-forward or neurodivergent friendly. That’s why this workbook of DBT skills has been reframed to be neurodivergent affirming while incorporating sensory strategies, managing meltdowns, stimming and more. Written and designed by an autistic ADHDer, you can learn skills and tool using the five sections:
- Everyday Well-being
- Mindfulness
- Distress Tolerance
- Emotional Regulation
- Sensory Needs
The best part? Each section is colour coordinated with an appealing colour to keep things colourful, engaging and sensory friendly. There’s a whole bunch of different tools and worksheets too!
Not sure why you might want or need this workbook? Let me help you out. In this workbook, you can find skills to support you with:
- recognising meltdown triggers
- managing meltdowns when they happen
- figuring out your sensory needs
- preventing sensory overload
- developing mindfulness strategies
- identifying your emotions
- learning ways to respond to your distress – neurodivergent style
It’s also self-paced so if you’re an individual, you can do it at home. If you’re a professional, there’s nothing stopping you from sharing this affirming workbook with a client or keeping this as a go to resource!

I LOVE this workbook! I just got it today and it brought me to tears… I love how affirming this is, both as an autistic adhder as well as a mental health professional. I will be getting several copies to give to student’s families in hopes that they can help understand their children/themselves better.I absolutely love how this looks and is organized. I ADORE the color-coded sections… they give me all the good feels! The outside cover feels amazing, love how soft and smooth it is! I love all the colors, so relaxing and soothing! And I love the size of the workbook… definitely A+ on that! Just….. awesome! What a wonderful vision the author had when creating this book! However, there are a few things that make it less than perfect. I wish the paper inside was thicker as it drives me nuts to see ink through pages. I just can’t see myself actually writing in this because it’s going to ruin each page. I know that’s just a personal preference, but this workbook is so dang good that I hate to see it in ruined by poor quality paper. BUT that’s just me and my sensory issues…My biggest problem is that it’s not written as concisely as it could be…. And there are some terms I don’t know (the spoon thing… I’m an elder millennial and idk what that means to use up all your spoons). Which is odd considering that pragmatic language deficits are common in autistics. There are quite a few typos (unless I am not getting that it’s intentional) and it just needs a good editing for precision of language. I also think the text would be more visually appealing if it were justified rather than left-aligned. Honestly, I would love to just go over this and rewrite it so that it’s absolutely PERFECT. (I have a THING for visually appealing and concise worksheets… I literally redo them for fun… did I mention my autism? Hahaa!)Overall, I adore this workbook and I am so thankful it crossed my path! It was an IMMEDIATE buy… and buy again… and probably download as well! Absolutely awesome work!

This is one of my better purchases since my AUDHD diagnosis. It helped me to really see my struggles so I could believe my diagnosis better and not feel like an impostor. That being said it also helped me see my strengths as well and that helps when we are feeling like we are failing at life and what seems to come naturally to others but not to us…Spoons=energy Spoon theory is the idea that we are all given a #of spoons each day and our tasks and social obligations use up spoons… and neurodivergent ppl have less spoons than the rest of the world…I explain this because I notice some other reviews mention that they don’t know what that is.I am not sure if they give an explanation in the book as I have not read the whole thing yet but I have done quite a few of the activities. The activities in the book have given me alot of awareness about myself and how to help myself when I am struggling… I have been unsuccessful talking to therapist’s but this book has been most helpful!

I work at a mental health facility that uses predominantly DBT and was so excited to find this book. I appreciate how the content is adjusted and applied as well as the extra sections on self-care and sensory needs. 5/5 stars for content and being visually pleasant.Unfortunately, it looks like something wonky happened during printing with my copy, where the introduction section is in the middle of the sensory part (see photos, apologies for the shadows). Hopefully it’s a one time thing and only my copy was affected? At least I have all the content.

It’s a good workbook but a little on the high side of price. It helps me understand my granddaughter a bit better too!

This workbook is absolutely incredible! Not only is it accessible in multiple ways, such as the colorful and interactive pages that are convenient for ADHDers. It also utilizes DBT skills in a way that better accommodates the needs of neurodivergent people. The mindfulness skill related to self check ins is simplistic and therefore has been a major hit with my clients. Incorporating meltdown mapping and establishing one’s sensory profile is what sets this workbook apart from the traditional DBT manual. Sonny is a wonderful human being and this is the most affirming workbook I own as a therapist! A bunch of my clients have already purchased it and said positive things about their experiences with it. I love the reframe on DBT opposite action to “act intentionally” because it aligns with engaging in values-based behaviors which feels like more affirming language. This workbook also taught me a lot about DBT skills that could cause ND clients harm, like interpersonal effectiveness skills. Sonny is an incredible advocate! They teach ND people that they have their own unique and valid communication styles and preferences. Not only do I recommend this workbook immensely, but I also recommend following Sonny on social media if you want to be a more affirming provider. They truly understand how to provide intersectional care, and that makes my heart feel so happy. Nice work Sonny! Also this is my dad’s account but it’s me, Jules! Lol.

LOVE IT!
I live with ADHD and have found regular DBT books difficult to follow, with too many words for my attention span! This book is simplified and not too wordy! It’s also colourful and a little larger print than post books, which I also LOVE!This book helps DBT look possible to learn and even entertaining with all the fill in areas! I’m really enjoying so far! And highly suggest to anybody with ADHD!
